Zermatt is a very unique and beautiful place to take a holiday. Due to its location skiing is one of the most popular things to do in Zermatt. Naturally while visiting the mountains surrounding Zermatt stopping off at the Matterhorn is a must. The Matterhorn was that last Alpine mountain to be climbed, and is quite famous all over the world. The fact that Zermatt is a car free city is reason enough to pay it a visit. Nearly every attraction takes on a whole new dimension when surrounded by completely pollution free streets. Indeed the lack of cars makes the city not only clean, but also remarkable quiet, visitors can enjoy the sounds of nature while still being surrounded by the conveniences of modern life.

Zermatt is a world famous tourist destination city, however Zermatt shopping leaves much to be desired. To be blunt, there is no reason to come to Zermatt if you are looking for a so called shopping vacation. There are plenty of stores in the city, but nothing outstanding enough to warrant a vacation. Instead come to Zermatt for the natural beauty of the region, and the world class skiing, then enjoy the pleasant (though bland) shopping experience if you have to buy any incidentals.

Simply put, you can't car hire in Zermatt, and there is almost no public car parking. Zermatt is a petrol free city; meaning that cars are banned from driving through the city and any person caught driving faces heavy fines. In order to get around residents and tourists use a system of taxies, busses, and cable cars; all of which are either electrical or solar powered. Bikes are also popular in the city, although visitors should note the no one is allowed to ride bikes on the main street in the middle of the city.

There are a large number of Zermatt hotels to choose from, although they are all relatively expensive. If you are on a budget the only real recourse to avoid paying a lot is to camp. This is not a bad option if you are in anyway outdoor inclined, as the mild weather and beautiful scenery is quite pleasant. If you can afford it however a stay at The Zermatterhof is a spectacular way to spend your vacation in absolute luxury. Zermatt restaurants are not well known for a reason; while the food is quite good it is not spectacular in any way. There are not real outstanding restaurants that you must visit, however they are all quite nice.
